OCTEC February 2013 Luncheon

Randy Durrenberger, Senior Project Manager of Kimley-Horn and Associates, will be presenting on Integrated Corridor Mobility (ICM). ICM is an advanced form of traffic management focusing on integrating multiple systems to achieve corridor-wide performance: freeway management, arterial management, incident traffic management, and traveler information combined into a holistic, outcome based network approach. ICM is being developed and applied in various ways throughout the country: the Dallas ICM on US 75 integrates managed HOV lanes, light rail, 900 traffic signals, and multiple TMCs into a multimodal and efficient system; San Diego ICM includes HOT lanes, reversible lanes, a decision support system, and transit enhancements to maximize system capacity and proactively manage congestion; the Virginia ICM focused on ridesharing, parking management, commuter rail, and future express lanes to spread travel demand and promote multimodal options. Randy will focus on a robust example rolling out now in the Bay Area. The I-80 ICM project combines Incident Management, Active Traffic Management, Adaptive Ramp Metering, and Traffic and Transit Information. The presentation will also address the project delivery process and some of the partnerships and agreements that have been forged in this multi-agency effort. The presentation includes a brief video describing the project elements.
Randy Durrenberger, P.E., has nearly 20 years of experience in the planning, design, testing, and implementation of freeway and arterial-based ITS projects. He has managed several major freeway management systems and Smart Corridors involving all facets of a project from planning to implementation. His experience includes planning (ITS strategic plans, system architecture, communications master plans, implementation plans), design (communications, conduit and cable, plan sets, general traffic, and field device locations), specifications (signal system, ITS devices), and field coordination of multiple contractors on various phases of implementation.

When & Where
In 1959 a very small group of Traffic Engineers in Orange County started meeting during their noon hour once each month. It had become quite evident that a dire need existed within the county for a forum within which all persons engaged in the Traffic Engineering function might periodically gather, discuss individual or mutual problems, arid arrive at solutions which reflect the combined talents of the professionals and the public. The organizers were soon joined by representatives of other firms or agencies who sought to either lend their talents or become recipients of professional assistance. The ORANGE COUNTY TRAFFIC ENGINEERING COUNCIL did indeed become the desired forum.
